Don’t miss the team registration deadline for the Institution’s 2023 Design Challenge.

Now is your last chance to register a team for the 2023 Design Challenge ahead of the 31 January 2023 deadline:

  • To register for the Design Challenge 2023, please complete this application form.

First- and second-year university teams are required to design and build an internal pipe-climbing robot. This is a device that can climb up the inside of a vertical transparent tube lifting an increasing load, limited only by the cost and sizings listed in the competition specifications.

The Design Challenge gives participants the chance to develop their engineering knowledge, soft skills and practical abilities on a specific project. As a result, competitors are exposed to the ‘real world’ of engineering. Design Challenge Steering Committee Chair Tim Baker notes that “The Design Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for students taking part, as it teaches them all the skills that they are going to need when they get into the workplace. Starting from a concept, from a clean sheet, to develop that through analysis and simulation with all of the engineering science that they’ve learned and applying that to a working product, and then to test it and take it to a competition.”
